How can I hide my own geocache?

I recently got introduced to geocaching through my two AVIS mentors. After taking off on my first adventure and locating a few geocaches, a question popped into my head–what does it take to build your own geocache? I came across the perfect how-to while doing my research at https://www.geocaching.com/play/search. 

A good starting step that I found to be most useful is familiarizing myself with geocaching. Take time to hunt down other geocaches to see what it’s all about. Experiment with different locations, different geocache sizes, and pay attention to difficulty levels. Once you feel you have enough experience and knowledge to plant your own, here’s what to do next. 

First, and most importantly, read the guidelines. You can find these at https://www.geocaching.com/play/guidelines. After thoroughly reading through these, it is your job to find a location that is within the rules and regulations. Click “Play” and then find where it says “Hide a geocache”

Next, you should determine where you want to hide your geocache. In order to do this you will need to find exact coordinates to be able to appropriately submit it online. I found that the best way to do this was using Google Maps. Once I located my ideal hiding spot, I clicked on my pin/icon. If you scroll down under “My Location”, you are able to see your coordinates.

Now it’s time to build your geocache! In order to do this you are going to need a container that is waterproof, durable and easy to hide. Once you have an appropriate container, you will a log book and something to write with. Your log book must be easy to sign and in your container. Although that is all you are required to have inside, it is recommended that you add in some smaller items for trades! Inside of mine I added a fidget toy, a beaded necklace, and a string bracelet. Remember that geocaching is a family friendly game so please make sure anything you include is age appropriate and within guidelines. Here is my geocache prior to hiding it!

Now it’s time for the fun part! After getting permission from the landowner or the association that manages the land, you may now hide your geocache. Return to your original coordinates that you scoped out and hide your geocache at that location. Be sure to remember the guidelines while doing this, and be respectful of the environment. 

Finally, you must submit your geocache for review. Be sure to fill out all the information required with as much detail as you can, as this will make the process faster. After filling out your cache page (accessible in the link provided above), a volunteer reviewer will be in contact with you. Be open to suggestions that they may provide you and get ready for your cache to be published!
